Yes, Cyclafem may cause weight gain. ortho tri cyclen contains Ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone which is a combination of estrogen which is a female sex hormone, and another female hormone called progestin which is used to cure the symptoms of menopause like vaginal dryness, irritation, burning, hot flashes and to prevent thinning of the bones (osteoporosis). The main division is between combined oral contraceptive pills, which contains both synthetic estrogens and progestogens, and progestogen-only pills.
Estrogen medications can cause a variety of common side effects including chest pain or heavy feeling, sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, sudden severe headache, confusion, pain in arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet or a breast lump, problems with vision, speech, pain, swelling, warmth, or redness in one or both legs, abnormal vaginal bleeding, migraine headache, pain, swelling, or tenderness in your stomach, confusion, problems with memory or concentration.
Combination of oral contraceptives acts by suppression of gonadotropins. Although the primary mechanism of this action is inhibition of ovulation, due to which there are chances of weight gain and other alterations include changes in the cervical mucus (which increase the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduce the likelihood of implantation).
A study published by DailyMed data found that patients taking ortho Cyclafem and other estrogens had a mean weight gain depending on drug, dose, and duration over the course of 6 months. However, the exact weight gain varied, depending on the estrogens used.
