Overdosage of Septran Syrup

  • Do not use more than prescribed dose. Taking more medication will not improve your symptoms; rather they may cause poisoning or serious side-effects. If you suspect that you or anyone else who may have overdosed of Septran Syrup, please go to the emergency department of the closest hospital or nursing home. Bring a medicine box, container, or label with you to help doctors with necessary information.

Storage of Septran Syrup

Septrin contains sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim that has antibiotic properties. They are used to control infections caused by bacteria. It is categorized under Pregnancy Category D.

While there are no large or controlled studies on the use of Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole in pregnant women, but a retrospective study reported an association between first-trimester exposure to Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole. This study observed an increased risk of congenital malformations particularly cardiovascular abnormalities, neural tube defects, oral clefts, urinary tract defects and club foot in newborn babies.

Although other epidemiologic studies did not identify statistically significant associations between trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole exposure and specific malformations, so women taking Septrin are advised to notify their gynecologist if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant during therapy or are breastfeeding an infant.
