Questions - Salbutamol Syrup

Salbutamol is also known as albuterol which is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist that is primarily used as a bronchodilator agent for the treatment of asthma. Beta-2 adrenergic agonists are generally associated with weight loss. The activation of beta receptor increases lipolysis and metabolic rate and can decrease appetite and this action further lead to weight loss.

In a study published in 2015 in journal Obesity (Silver Spring) albuterol with caffeine had shown a significant increase in lean body mass and reduced fat mass without showing any change in food intake. Since caffeine and albuterol are approved for the treatment of asthma in children and adolescents and changes body composition without any change in the food intake, this combination can be further explored for use in treating pediatric obesity.

Another study published in 2006 in British Journal of Sports Medicine demonstrated that oral administration of salbutamol does cause some change in body weight in healthy men this may be due to the difference in experimental conditions, such as species, dose, mode of administration, age, and sex. So, the weight gain or loss may vary from patient to patient and their dose and route of administration.

If you're concerned about weight changes while taking Salbutamol, consult your healthcare provider or doctor.
