Questions - Neurobion Forte Injection

The safety profile of Neurobion Forte is unknown. The active ingredients of Neurobion Forte are calcium pantothenate, cyanocobalamin, nicotinamide, pyridoxine and thiamine. It is used to treat diabetic neuropathy, high cholesterol, clogged arteries, vitamin B3 deficiency, arthritis, anaemia and diarrhoea, folic acid deficiency, etc. US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has specified Nicotinamide as a pregnancy category C drug which indicates that animal studies show an adverse effect on the fetus, but there are no teratogenic studies of nicotinamide in pregnant women and vitamin B1 (thiamine), B6 (pyridoxine) belongs to pregnancy category A, which means studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in all trimester of pregnancy.

A study published in 2015 in the journal of Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews showed that vitamin B6 protects against certain congenital malformations, pre‐eclampsia and preterm birth. Studies suggest that normal amount of Nicotinamide is safe during pregnancy, but high doses may cause liver problems. Another study found that untreated and undetected vitamin B12 deficiency in infants can increase the risk of neurological damage.

Women before taking Neurobion Fort are advised to notify their gynaecologist if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant.
