Questions - Melacare Cream

Melacare may cause harm to the fetus during pregnancy. Melacare contains hydroquinone, mometasone furoate, and tretinoin in combination. Hydroquinone is a melanin synthesis inhibitor, Mometasone Furoate is a glucocorticoid and Tretinoin is also known as retinoic acid which is derived from vitamin A.

There is no study found regarding the pregnancy effect due to Melacare but when hydroquinone, mometasone furoate, and tretinoin are given individually may cause teratogenicity. Hydroquinone and mometasone furoate has been categorized under pregnancy category C, which means risk is not ruled out. Tretinoin has been categorized under pregnancy category D, which means there is positive evidence of teratogenicity. There is a high risk of a severely deformed infant if tretinoin is given to a pregnant woman. It should be used during pregnancy only in severe disease or life-threatening situations for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective.

Women taking Melacare are advised to notify their gynaecologist if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant during therapy or are breastfeeding an infant.
