Overdosage of Ketoconazole

Storage of Ketoconazole

Questions - Ketoconazole

Ketoconazole causes weight loss. It is a phenylpiperazine derivative which belongs to the antifungal drugs and comes in a subclass of medications called azole antifungals. Ketoconazole is used for the treatment of superficial and systemic fungal infections. It works by suppressing the sterol 14-a-dimethylase, a microsomal cytochrome P450-dependent enzyme.

 It is not recommended for the patients with acute or chronic liver disease.

 Ketoconazole medication can cause a variety of common side effects including diarrhea, anorexia, vomiting, nausea, constipation, dry mouth, abdominal or upper abdominal pain, tongue discoloration, dyspepsia, flatulence, dysgeusia and dry mouth.

 According to DailyMed and NIH studies, it has been found that some patients had experienced weight loss due to loss of appetite. However, the exact weight loss varied, depending on the antifungal drugs used.

The currently available treatments for this disease are expensive, present high toxicity and are associated to difficulties of healing and parasite resistance.
