Femilon Tablet - Precautions & How to Use

Before using Femilon Tablet, inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over the counter products (e.g. vitamins, herbal supplements, etc.), allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions (e.g. pregnancy, upcoming surgery, etc.). Some health conditions may make you more susceptible to the side-effects of the drug. Take as directed by your doctor or follow the direction printed on the product insert. Dosage is based on your condition. Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens. Important counseling points are listed below.
  • Age above 35 years
  • Avoid smoking during drug intake
  • Avoid taking it, if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant
  • Consult a doctor if you have diabetes, obesity, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, mild hypertension, migraine, mental illness or gallbladder disease
  • Do not take, if you have a Blood clots in a blood vessel or the lungs or any unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Does not protect against sexuall transmitted diseases

Overdosage of Femilon Tablet

  • Do not use more than prescribed dose. Taking more medication will not improve your symptoms; rather they may cause poisoning or serious side-effects. Yes, Femilon can cause weight gain. Femilon is a combination oral contraceptive drug with active ingredients Desogestrel and Ethinylestradiol. It comes under the class of progestin and estrogen hormones which acts by suppressing the gonadotropins thus inhibit the release of ovum during the menstrual cycle. These hormones can cause fluid retention and an increased appetite, and both contribute to weight gain.

Femilon should not be used in women with deep-vein thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders, coronary artery disease, diabetes, depression, gallbladder disease, jaundice, and asthma. Overdosage of Femilon can cause nausea, and withdrawal bleeding in females. Femilon medication can cause various common side effects including nausea, vomiting, weight gain, breast tenderness, headache, irregular or no periods, amenorrhea and edema, etc. 

A study published in 1993 in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology demonstrated that women experienced weight gain when Femilon was given to prevent pregnancy. However, the exact weight gain varied, depending on the oral contraceptives agent used.
