Questions - Deflazacort Tablet

Deflazacort can be used during pregnancy and has no teratogenic effect on the fetus. FDA has categorised this drug under the pregnancy category C, which means animal studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate studies in humans, but benefits may show the use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks. It is a glucocorticoid used topically in the treatment of various skin disorders. It also contains immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties.

Corticosteroids have shown teratogenic effects in many species when given in doses equivalent to the human dose. In animal studies, an increased risk of cleft palate was seen in the offspring when corticosteroids were given to pregnant mice, rats, and rabbits. There are not enough and well-controlled studies found in pregnant women. Corticosteroids can only be used in pregnancy when the potential benefit proves the potential risk to the fetus. Signs of hypoadrenalism in infants born to mothers who have received corticosteroids during pregnancy was seen.

The ability of corticosteroids to cross the placenta varies between individual drugs, however, deflazacort can easily cross the placenta. So, the women taking Deflazacort are advised to notify their gynaecologist if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant.
