Questions - Alprax Tablet

Alprax (Alprazolam) is an antianxiety agent (benzodiazepines) used primarily for treating mild to moderate anxiety. Weight gain is seen among people who take Alprax, especially in females, 60+ aged individuals, have been taking the drug for < 1 month, also taking medication Zyprexa, and have depression.
A study published in 2016 in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research found that people taking Alprax and other benzodiazepines (BDZs) gained on average of about 8 pounds over the course of one year. However, the exact weight gain varied, depending on the benzodiazepines used.
An article published in Psychiatry Research in April 2000 concluded that a significant decrease in daily food intake and body weight gain associated with the usage of benzodiazepines sub-class of antianxiety drugs. However, this is more likely to occur over the use of 6 months or one year of BDZs.
Some other patients have reported a loss in their weight while using Alprax; more research is needed to evaluate how Alprax and other BDZs may contribute to such weight changes.
BDZs are not the only class of antianxiety drugs that may have side effects of weight gain. Other antianxiety drugs such as Azapirones (Buspirone, Tandospirone) may also cause weight gain.
If you're concerned about weight changes while taking Alprax, consult your healthcare provider or doctor.
